Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club Inc.
Established in 1936, MBGLAC is a family orientated fishing club with about 250 members, including Small Fry (up to and including 10 years as at 1st July) and is active in big game, estuary, beach and bottom bouncing. We prioritise the education our Juniors (up to and including 15 years as at 1st July) and Small Fry in the ethics of fishing/angling, sustainability and catch and release methods.
Our Membership, is for the Financial Year 1st July to 30th June.
On this site, you will find information regarding Committee Members with thier phone numbers. You are welcome to contact any of them for assistance on club matters.
During the year we conduct six (6) major fishing events. The Merimbula Open Yellowfin and Broadbill – Southern Bluefin Tuna game fishing tournaments, with prizes of over $10,000, the Gala Fishing Weekend and annual “Monster Fresh Fish” auction, the Tri-Estuary Challenge, the Dusky Dash for Cash and the Snapper Classic. Dates and details of these are listed on this site and are published in the club newsletter ‘Catch’ published 4 times a year and ditributed in March, June, September & December.
Located in the Clubroom is the “Leader Board” listing all the fish that have been weighed in for the Club’s fishing year being 1st June to 31st May. By checking this board, you can see how your heaviest fish, based on a correctly completed Weighslip, for over twenty species, compares with what other members have caught. From this board also, the annual Club Champions are determined, as follows:
We have categories for Men’s Open Champion, Ladies Open Champion, Junior Open Champion, Small fry Open Champion and Lake and Beach Champion. The board is updated each time you weigh in a heavier fish of any of the species. For each fish, you receive one point for every 100gms, to a maximum of 15 points.
The same fish species but a different scoring system is used for the Club Champion. Points are allocated on the basis of 10 points for the heaviest fish of each species, down to 1 point for the 10th heaviest fish of each species, with zero points for fish weighing less than the 10th heaviest.
Catch and Release
Five fish: Bream, Dusky Flathead, Estuary Perch, Whiting and Jewfish are included in the Club’s Catch and Release section based on brag mat length photos. $300 cash for the longest Bream and for all other entries a ”raffle” draw to win $200 cash.
Activities during the year include the Club’s annual Members Presentation Dinner, an away family fishing/competition trip, family fun and BBQ nights, a Bus Trip to a local venue, monthly fishing instruction nights at the Clubrooms, the Annual Seafood Dinner at the Clubrooms, the annual fishing “Grudge Match” against Pambula and Eden Fishing Clubs, a family Christmas Party (with Santa Claus in attendance) and guest speakers to keep us informed. We also conduct two (2) DPI Fisheries NSW Fish Care “Learn to Fish” courses and a Shimano Kids Fish Fest. Again these are listed on this site and in the club’s “Catch Newsletter”.
The bar is open from 6.30pm every Friday night and visitors are most welcome to come and enjoy the ambience.
During the warmer months we have a family night at the Club, on the last Friday of the month. Every Friday night, there is an up to date fishing report. Why not come along and find out where the fish are biting and what has been caught, through the week.
If you have any questions about the club or its activities, just ask one of the Committee or club members, that are present on a Friday night or contact us. Most Friday nights we conduct a raffle with generous prizes.
See you at the Club.
