Damage to the Fish Cleaning Pontoon

To whoever thought it was a bit of fun to set the Merimbula fish cleaning pontoon adrift on Sunday night, 9 November, please know your actions have caused real damage to a valued community facility.

The pontoon had only just been put back in the water after 16 long months of hard volunteer work — replacing moorings, chains, and blocks — all in preparation for the busy Christmas season.

Because of this senseless act, the pontoon banged against the causeway during the night in the strong south-westerly winds, leaving holes and likely more damage underneath. It now needs to be taken out of the lake for repairs, which could cost thousands of dollars and delay its return for everyone to use over summer.

This pontoon is looked after and funded entirely by volunteers from the Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club Inc., for the benefit of the whole community. It’s incredibly disappointing to see the time, money, and effort of so many local people treated this way.

The matter has been reported to police, and we’re asking for the community’s help.
