Welcome
Merimbula currently holds the 2024 Bob Lowe trophy for the most meritorious tag and release by a GFAA affiliated club in Australia. This is a huge honour and a testament to our waters and our members who fish these waters passionately for tag and release points.
Every club member who tagged fish contributed to this award but special mention does need to be made to member Tyrone O’Connor who took out the 2024 Tailored Marine trophy for highest point score boat tag and release marlin, and Maree and Logan Walker who each took out their respective 2024 Tom Roache State Champion highest point score tag and release points for small fry anglers. A great honour for our Club.

Southern Zone, COCK O’ THE WALK RESULTS …….. JUNE 2025
Hi All, For the new World junior line class records, records are available for both male and female anglers ages 16 & under. There is no differentiation between small fry and junior, they will all fall under the same record category for line and tippet classes
To see the species list click on Layout 1.
Note for NSWGFA anglers, if it is purely a World Record and not combined with an Australian and or a State Record then the angler must make the application direct to IGFA and not through the NSWGFA Records Officer.
NSWGFA and GFAA will only handle combined State, Australian and World claims and the application must come through the angler’s club as per normal.
Note: These records are combined Small Fry and Junior therefore male and female under 16 years of age and under are only applicable for these new records.
Note: All Billfish except Swordfish and all Sharks and some other species are not included in the category, so please thoroughly check the species list before putting in a claim.
Kind Regards, NSWGFA Secretary Nigel Rushworth

Local MBGLAC junior member, Logan Walker, captured a yellowtail kingfish at Haycock Point on the 20th December 2024. It was recaptured on the 2nd February 2025 at Montague Island by Tim Mason.
DPIRD send certificates to those that tag fish and are recaptured and Logan received this last week.

The GFAA App is attracting plenty of interest. There have been well over 2000 downloads. With a quiet, off-season time coming up, we’d like to get the attention of members and non-members alike to download it and promote our sport, association and clubs Feedback to info@gfaa.asn.au is welcome. |
Febuary 2025
Tathra Amateur Fishing Club held its first marlin competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The marlin bit very well on Friday north of Tathra with reports of 29 marlin between 14 boats. On Saturday, around 20 marlin were caught and then, due to the weather decline, there were fish caught Sunday morning, but many boats stayed home. I also heard reports of dolphin fish and sharks being caught. Reports of the ocean currents that were getting stronger were making the fishing conditions not so good. The water temperature on the shelf is around 23 degrees celsius with the current running to the south. Bait was patchy early and it came to the surface at low tide in the middle of the day with the feeding marlin.

Some Advice
The NSW and Australian Game Fishing Association have a number of opportunities for our Juniors to fish competitively.
Fishing Year runs from 1 June to 31 May of the following year
Small Fry Angler – under 11 years of age during the fishing year.
Junior Angler – from 11 years of age to under 16 years of age.
Under game fishing ethics, captured fish weight need to exceed the breaking strain of the main line used.
Tagging fish increases the eligibility of captures as fish only need to comply with minimum lengths and/or weights that are stipulated by the relevant association.
Using light lines also increases eligibility.
Eligible Species – The MBGLAC, NSWGFA and GFAA each have their own eligible species list for their annual trophies and awards. Familiarize yourself with the differences.
Make sure your tackle is compliant, lines and rigs and hook placement needs to be understood if you want to ensure your catch/tag and release complies.
All game fish captures will be weighed in and a weigh slip provided by the weighmaster.
All fish, whether tagged or captured shall be entered via the Lakeview Trophy Board Fish Capture Entry Portal on the Web.
Tags are available from the Club.
Ensure you are affiliated with the NSWGFA in order for your catches, and those of your Juniors ,can be entered into State and National awards.
Our Waters
Our waters are blessed with any number of game fish that we can target year-round.
Our iconic marlin run commencing in December and going right through to May is what dreams are made of and attract fishers from around the world to target these fish.
But, there are many other options all year to chase game fish using game fishing practices that for the competitive fishers amongst us give us plenty to target.
Tuna, both Southern Bluefin and Yellowfin have made welcomed returns, and whilst can move through our waters quite quickly, they can make appearances in any month but in particular the period between June and December.
For our juniors the options are even broader and species including shark, salmon, striped tuna and kingfish provide year-round opportunities to participate in the GFAA National Junior Competition.
Our Fish Attracting Device (FAD) located over summer between Merimbula and Eden more often than not holds Mahi Mahi, an ideal species for juniors to hone their trolling, live baiting and lure casting skills.
Keep an eye out on our Clubs workshops to be schedules before the end of the year, or come along on a Friday night and seek advice. We are passionate about helping your success.
