Great early morning weather for those heading to sea over the weekend. Saturday saw plenty of boats out off Bournda Island and back to the Golf Course at Tura Beach. Reports were still plenty of undersized flathead with legal sized fish mixed in them. The fish size averaged 36 to 40 centimetres with odd larger models. There were also an odd flying gurnard being caught also. The best depth for the flathead was 35 to 45 metres. The inshore water temperature is still sitting around 17 degrees.
The reefs were a bit slow over the weekend, the tides weren’t playing with it falling. There were odd snapper caught, just pan-sized fish under that 40 centimetre size, and odd small morwong all under 35 centimetres. The afternoon bite might be better if the weather allows through next week.
The beaches suffered on the weekend with no surf at all. The weather, with off shore winds, didn’t help. There were a few salmon caught at Dolphin Cove and Bournda Beach. Tura Heads also had a few fish for the lure guys. Bait fishing is definitely the go for the beaches, include a Surf Popper to cover all bases. Hopefully a bit of swell will appear and make things right.
The estuaries are definitely waking up now, after the Winter cold. The Bega River at Tathra has a few flathead starting to move around. With the water sitting at a constant 17 degrees, the dusky flathead are awake with it. I heard of a couple around that 57 centimetre size caught, plus a few smaller models. There were also some nice bream in the mid 30’s. Some estuary perch and as per the picture, mulloway caught. The Merimbula Lake has trevally and blackfish visible in different areas in the front lake, and odd duskies are stirring up the Top lake with trevally and a few tailor. I haven’t heard any reports from the Pambula system, but would expect similar things happening.
