With visitors flocking in during the school holidays we repeat advice to take care with appropriate social distancing while fishing especially with the excitement around town from competitors in the MBGLAC and Tackle World Merimbula Winter Holiday Junior Fishing Competition.

Weather permitting game fishing anglers are reporting both yellowfin and bluefin tuna together with albacore and striped tuna all well offshore. Try the second drop off. Closer in about our local reefs; Long Point, Haycock, Lennards and Boyds Tower there remain good snapper and morwong, with the big snapper preferentially taking large pink soft plastics. Ocean flathead are best in the deeper waters off Tura Headland, try 20-22 fathoms.

We advise that the Merimbula Lake channel has moved significantly westwards and many boats are hitting shallows where there was once the main channel. Aim for the western side of the MBGLAC fish cleaning pontoon as your turning mark. The bar is shallow and potentially dangerous and due to the shallow conditions Marine Rescue Merimbula is restricted to crossing the bar to only between 3 hours before high tide and 2 hours after.

With the Clubs “Winter Holiday Junior Fishing Competition” now underway we can report some excellent results so far with good tailor in the Bega River near Mogareeka as well as in the Merimbula Top Lake. Generally best results are achieved with soft plastics as swarms of smaller fish will attack baits, making it hard for the larger fish to have time to bite. There are some large trevally as well as luderick in the lower Merimbula channel and a few flathead, bream and trevally are available from shore near the Top Lake boat hire. Australian salmon can be taken in the lower Pambula River and near Bar Beach at Merimbula. Salmon are also travelling our local beaches, try Tura North and Haycock.
