FISHING REPORT Week Commencing 14 September 2015

What a difference a Week Makes.

Possibly the return of better weather but also some warmth in the ocean currents, up to 16 degrees, has invigorated local fish and anglers are reporting good catches of Ocean Flathead all along the coast from Merimbula to Tathra. Try between 17 and 22 fathoms. Best bait by far is fresh Striped Tuna but in default Pilchards bring a good return. It goes without saying that at this time of the year when drifting along for Flathead anglers are often entertained by frolicking whales and schools of dolphins! On the reefs Morwong and Snapper remain active best early and late on a rising tide. On a less happy note we hear Chinamen Leatherjackets are back with the warm currents – so far well offshore.

Salmon and Tailor remain patchy on the local beaches and headlands but some good fish are around and they respond well to poppers. The best time for Tailor is just on dark. Both Salmon and Tailor are suckers for ganged Pilchards. The estuaries are starting to show some life and very large Tailor and Trevally are reported from Merimbula Top Lake. We also have a report of a 74cm Dusky Flathead caught and released from the Bega River, so it looks like come October the estuaries will be back in action.

On Thursday 17 September commencing 7.00pm the Club is holding an open meeting at its rooms at Spencer Park for all parties interested in making a submission for an Artificial Reef within the sheltered Merimbula Bay. Interested regions including fishing clubs and individuals have been requested to lodge their interest with DPI to have the proposed “fifth” new reef built in their region. The DPI’s offshore artificial reefs program is dedicated to increasing fishing opportunities for recreational fishers by creating new high value fishing locations. Access to a sheltered deep water reef structure would greatly enhance recreational fishing and tourism for Merimbula.

The Mex Williams Memorial Club Trip and Fishing Competition is the Club’s next event, scheduled for 16-17 October at the Anchorage Holiday Apartments – Bermagui. This event is open to all comers and no entry for fishing is required – it is a fun competition with a BBQ on the Saturday evening followed by the prize giving. Make your own bookings. All enquires to Merrily Bell 0427 011 074.

On Friday 18 September Jeff Knox and Darragh Reynolds are hosts at the Spencer Park Clubhouse from 6.30 pm with happy hour and snacks followed by the fishing report and the popular weekly raffle. All enquires to Lindon Thompson on 0411 873 880. Guests are welcome, come and enjoy the lovely views, ambience and friendship with very competitive bar prices.

Wales provide spectacular sights off Eden.

The spectacle of Humpback Whales frolicking in the Eden area together with Dolphins and Seals, all attracted by large shoals of local baitfish, has excited whale watchers during the past week.   The seas have now moderated and good catches of Morwong and Snapper are reported from the Eden area using pilchards, striped tuna and squid baits. September is usually a windy month for the south coast and this does restrict ocean fishing but it won’t be long now until October which heralds in the start of the new fishing season. The 20-22 Fathom mark off Tathra and Tura Headland remains productive for both Sand and Tiger Flathead.    Salmon remain patchy on the local beaches and headlands but some good fish are around and they respond well to poppers. The estuaries remain very quiet due to the low temperatures, try the entrance areas.

On Saturday 12 September the Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club is hosting a Sponsors Evening commencing at 6.30pm at its Spencer Park Clubrooms. Members are invited to register to support the Club and for catering.

Weather and seas improving after last week’s wipe-out.

Seas are now moderating and hardy anglers starting to venture out to sea again following the wipeout last week due to the rain and wind.  We expect local reefs will provide some Snapper and Morwong. Try soft plastics and remember early morning and dusk are the best times to fish.  The 22 Fathom mark off Tathra and Tura Headland should return both Sand and Tiger Flathead.    Salmon remain patchy on the local beaches and headlands.  You need to keep a close watch on bird activity to locate the schools.  The estuaries are virtually closed down due to the fresh and low temperatures, try the entrance areas.

Young Isaac Di Donato’s parents passed on his great photo showing a lovely local Calamari (Squid) taken on a jig from the Merimbula Fishing Platform.  This shows that even when everything else gets tough there is always some exciting angling activity around Merimbula.

Flathead firing off Merimbula and good Salmon active on the local beaches

Good Morwong and Snapper are reported at our local reefs but with the drop in local water temperature to below 13 degrees they are certainly not rushing out to feed.  Early morning and late afternoon brings the best chance of a hit.  Reports to hand confirm Ocean Flathead remain on the chew between Merimbula and Tathra.  Try the 22 fathom mark off Tura Headland.

There are lots of Dolphins feeding on bait fish and Whales have been sighted during their exodus to Antarctica.  Salmon are patchy on the local beaches and headlands and you need to keep a close watch on bird activity to locate the schools.

Dusky Flathead have been reported at Womboyn however Bream are now well up-stream. The other estuaries are fishing slowly due to cold temperatures.  Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club member Glen Rollason passed on his photo showing a fine summer Whiting caught and released in the Bega River, showing us what to look for as soon as the temperatures rise.
